Tobin Freeman

My time in Ecuador was a life changing experience where I got to meet some of the best people both within the program and the local community as well as trying so many new experiences along the way. I learned so much through the hands on activities and the workshops we had. I would return in a heartbeat to do it all again.

Karen Pacheco Garcia

Hi, my name is Karen, and I’m excited to be part of RFI this year in 2025 as the University of Washington representative! I’m looking forward to working with the local Ecuadorian community and experiencing everything firsthand. As a landscape architecture major, I don’t often get to see the actual construction process, so being able to watch it happen and be part of it is amazing. I’m eager to learn about practices like agroforestry and to see how bamboo can be a more sustainable material than it might seem at first. I love that these methods help the environment, create green jobs for locals, and strengthen their communities at the same time. I know I still have a lot to learn about ways to care for our surroundings and the environment, but that’s why I’m so excited to grow through this program. Hearing others share their experiences makes me even more motivated. It will be hard work, but I believe hard work always pays off!
